pipes

While designing the pipeline systems, the level and depth of the trench is calculated depending on
factors such as terrain and the usage to which the pipeline is to be put.

Excavation and pipe laying must take place simultaneously as leaving open trenches for too long
makes them unsuitable for use. As pipe laying advances, trenches must be backfilled immediately.
The pipe joints, however, should be left exposed until after the pipeline system has been tested.
The minimum width of the trench must be equal to the pipe diameter plus 300-mm. At the
crown of the pipe, the trench width must not exceed the pipe diameter plus an additional 600-mm.

  Trench Formation

pipes
Direct Laying: The formation of the trench must consist of stable, uniform and smooth soil devoid of irregularities for direct laying of pipes. The bed of the trench should be smoothed out evenly to provide uniform support to the pipes laid. There will be some extra excavations required at the pipe socket junctions to enable adequate joint assembly and pipe support.

Pipe Laying on Bedding: Incases where soils are unsuitable for direct pipe laying , trenches must be excavated to an additional depth of 100mm at the minimum and suitable bedding, as detailed later, must be utilized for pipe laying. under severe conditions it may become necessary to increase the depth of the bedding even further.

  Handling, transport, and storage

pipes
Bundled as well as loose pipes must always have timber supports not less then 75-mm square at distances not exceeding 1.5 meters along the length of the stack. Pipes with sockets must be placed with alternating ends to avoid damage to the sockets. Pipes of different dimensions should be stored separately. Wherever this is not possible, large and heavier pipes must always be at the bottom of stack.

The stack height should be restricted to seven layers or less, with the total height not exceeding 2 meters. Where a storage period of more than a month is anticipated or where storage is to be done in temperatures exceeding 23 digress C, the stacks must never exceed 4 layers or a maximum stack height of l meter . All pipes should be properly covered by tarpaulin, which should be securely fastened to the timber supports to afford shaded and airy storage conditions.

Fittings can be affected by weathering thus special care should be taken to afford sheltered conditions for their storage in order to avoid accidental damage.

pipes
The manufacturing and testing in done for

1) pipes - in accordance with IS : 4985 -2000

2) Threads - (a) 1/2" and 3/4" - 14 TPI (b) 1" and above - 11 TPI

All the above pipes, except Non-pressure pipes are tested for potable water supplies in accordance with their relevant standards and as per the test methods given in IS: 12235.

Notes : 1) The table is based on metric series of pipe dimensions given in ISO 161/1 in respect of pipe dimensions and ISO DIS 4422.

2) The wall thickness of pipes is based on a safe working stress of 8.6 MPa at 270C and the working pressure gets reduced at sustained higher temperatures. Occasional rise in temperature as in summer season with concurrent corresponding reduction in temperature during nights has no deleterious effect on the life working pressure of the pipes considering the total life of pipes.

m = Minimum depth of engagement. dem = Mean outside diameter.
dim = Inner diameter of socket measured at Mid-Point of socket length 'm'

Installation Procedure
1.
Spigot end is provided with 150chamfer for full length pipe.If cut lengths are to be used, then deburr the spigot end after cutting at site and provide 150chamfer,using file.
  pipes

2.
Mark insertion depth on spigot.

3.
Clean the socket and ensure that elastomeric sealing ring is properly installed in its groove without twist.
pipes
4.
Apply lubricant on the spigot.

5.
Slide the spigot in to socket thus compressing the sealing lips. In case of large diameter of pipes, use pipe jack.
